Food groups

This year for camp we did something different instead of having a camp cook. The teachers must have felt for the parent cooking for our whole class because this year we had food groups. The way a food group works is you have a group of 4,5 or 6 people in group and they sort out food for the whole camp. It seemed like a great idea and everyone was willing to do it. I was in a group of four with Riely,Alex and James.Sorting out prices and quantities of food seemed to not be as difficult as I once thought. When we got to camp food was the last thing on mind. But dinner loomed closer. Riely was cooking dinner and I wasn’t worried for Riely because he is quite a good cook. Dinner was amazing it was chicken breast in a pita pocket with salad. Yummy! It certainly set the standard. All the following meals were very good some highlights were Pancakes,Burgers,Porridge and American hot dogs. Overall I think that the food groups idea was a success and I would do it again.

Christchurch tour guide

Have ever been wandering around Christchurch aimlessly not knowing what to do? Well now you don't have to with Lachlan’s guide around Christchurch. You can now learn the hot spots of Christchurch in handy light weight book. Why don't go to the museum with its ever changing exhibits and grasp New Zealand's ever changing history. Quake city is always an excellent place to visit learning about the devastation an earthquake can make and how a city can recover.  There are many amazing landmarks like the bridge of remembrance,Christchurch cathedral(currently under repair),Cardboard Cathedral and many more. If you are with kids I strongly recommend the Margaret Mahy playground. It is an amazing place. If you an art fan the art gallery is a great place for you and there is a lot of graffiti art if you look for it. And if you do prefer having a tour guide and your feet get tired easily. Take the tram. It has stops along most of the must see places that I have mentioned. I strongly urge you to see these amazing places.

Hawdon hut

On February the 11th all the Year 8’s(apart from one)left to go tramp to Hawdon Hut then conquer cave stream. It was a perfect day for tramping, the sun shining down on us. But I wasn't focused on the weather.  I was focused on William Pike. As I had read his book but it was surreal meeting him in person.  When we got out of the vans you can imagine everyone being very restless after the two hour drive. We got our packs and Mr Priddy began briefing us about our journey ahead. When we finally set off, I started chatting happily among friends. We were only around five minutes in the walk when we meet our first obstacle. The river. William Pike started explaining a good ways to cross rivers and explained that we should link arms and walk slightly upstream. We all did as asked. Then we set off again. It was a pretty scenic walk. I enjoyed the birds chattering and trickle of the river. It was pretty peaceful until the terrain changed to a empty river bed. With nothing to protect from the sun’s relentless rays and everyone’s drink bottles empty. We rushed to ,anything that sounded like a water source. When lunch rolled around everyone gathered around one tree that stood alone on the barren riverbed. As we set off again with my mouth feeling as dry as a desert. We finally reached a forest. With the shade I found a newly provided energy and before I knew it I heard a river. It sounded like music to my ears. I sprinted with all my might and as the sight of the river filled my eyes. I almost dived in drinking to my heart’s content while yelling. “Guys! WATER!” Everyone rushed over we splashed each other while lying in the water. We stayed for ten more minutes then we set off again. Nothing really happened until we reached the hutt. I sighed feeling a sense of accomplishment. As the wooden building loomed into sight. After we settled in we headed down to the river. For a swim it was really fun then we took we went on a walk boulder hopping. Everyone was going pretty slow so me and Eb started having competitions on who can do the coolest jumps in between boulders. I obviously won. We walked back and it was dark. When we got back we had tea and started William Pike some questions I remember we talked about Williams accident and questions about his leg. When we went to sleep I tried to put my clothe in a sleeping bag cover but that didn't work very well So I resorted to sleeping with Eb as my pillow.I woke up from a surprisingly comfortable sleep. I started taking quietly to Riely and Eb before we decided to head out. It was a crisp morning. As we walked along the morning dew and looked at the rising sun we thought about the day ahead. It felt like a blur as everyone woke up and started packing everything up. Soon enough we set off the felt half as long as we saw familiar landmarks that would send us rushing round as we knew we close to the end. As I saw the end in sight. I sprinted and felt the sense of pride over come me. Then I was excited for what was next Cave stream.

Speech

I am proud of my speech but next time I would do it a lot differently. I would not jump into the first topic I see next time and I 'd spend more time on the presentation.

New book

My new book

I started reading this book on Tuesday and it's already pretty interesting so far. It has been about a boy sick of moving schools and he is travelling  on the bus to school one day. Then he sees a strange boy running bare feet away from something. Next it switchs over to a officer reporting to a strange act of vandalism on a building site. Were all the surveying equipment was moved. The officer found that there were owls on the site. I have read a book like this before called scat where the vandalise stuff to stop them building in the forest. I think this book will have a simular storyline but it is good anyways.

Bee bot

This is what Harry and me have been doing for the last two sessions with bee bots. It was very frustrating to code them. This was the first time for us using bee bots.

Reading review

The wolf's story is a book about the wolf's side of the story for red riding hood. The blurb talks about how the wolf did nothing wrong or did he? The front cover shows the wolf winking with red riding hood in the background. This made me very suspicious of the wolf. The first few pages showed the wolf helped the grandma around the house, but when red riding hood starts visiting the wolf gets jealous. This makes me think jealousy is a big part of the problem. Then one day the wolf is looking for some herbs when he bumps into Red riding hood. He Hurries back to the house to tell Grandma about red riding hood then she bumps her head and is knocked out. Wolf wears her dress and it turns into the fairy tail with red riding hood saying ” What big eyes you have grandma.” And so on. It ends with the wolf saying “ Would I lie to you?” This makes me extremely suspicious. You should read this so you can tell me your theorie.

Power of Positivity

 I reckon positivity is
great. To be positive is something holding society together. Positivity is hope and happiness. This guide is going to give people the secret of positivity.

Step one: Treat how you want to be treated. You probably have all heard it but thats because its true. Im sure you like to be treated nicely. So if everyone treats each other nicely there would be no negativity.

Step two: Hope. Always hope and keep your head high don't let people get to your head. Remember the best advice you can get is from yourself. Hoping doesn’t work how ever if you don’t do anything about it though.

Step three: Persevere. Now that you have your tools of positivity you need to persevere and try to infect everyone with positivity!

I hope you liked my guide and learnt something.

Ropes

Ropes

The ropes course was a lot different from what I expected it to be like. I thought there that we would be just learning to tie ropes and maybe climb up a small climbing wall because since it was at the groynes I had never saw any climbing things. When we got there I looked outside and saw a 25 meter climbing course it was so cool. I personally hate heights but enjoy climbing anyways.

My goal was to achieve as well as I could and to push myself. Then Paul and Alan came up and talked to us they told us that they would be our climbing instructors for the day. We split off into to groups and started some team activities. I was thinking oh no this will be boring but it was really fun. We did an activity where you had a ball and had to pass and hand to hand as quickly as possible. We got the fastest time of 0.5 seconds thanks to some good thinking from Brooklyn.

When we started climbing we went in a group of three. I went with Jack and Hugh. We were last to start the Giant's ladder. Which is basically like he name a humongous  ladder which gets wider apart each rung. It was so dodgy because it wobbled as well. I felt like my mouth was a desert and there was a stampede of elephants in my stomach. I made it up to the 9th rung before it was time. The rest of the climbing courses were fine.

When I left I was happy with what I did but would like to do more if I get another climbing experience again. My favourite was the flying kiwi where your team and you run in opposite directions with a rope attached. It was my favourite because it was actually like flying. For the next challenge I'm going to be thinking it will be great rather than boring.

Clubs

My school has started clubs. On a Friday afternoon we all go off to our clubs of our choice. We stay with that club for the rest of the term.

My first choice for clubs was coding and robotics because I had seen Riely and Benj doing scratch and I wanted to make a game. It also looked the most appealing.

I expected it to be us going on scratch or something similar and make a game before the end of the term. I never really thought of the robotics side of it though.

When I got there the teachers(Mr Reed and Mrs Sutherland)were talking about all the things we were going to do, like scratch, programming robots like bee bots. It all sounded really cool. Then we were taught how to use Scratch jr. We were put into groups. We made some real cool scratch jr presentations. It was exciting to experiment with it. I helped the year one in my group.

My goal is to improve my skills and to be able to make scratch games with confidence. I'm looking forward to my next session and I wonder what we'll be doing.

Cross country

CLAP! We were off. I ran out in front. My legs and heart pounding. Yes! A good start now I just need to keep my lead. If you're are wondering what's going on. It's my school cross country. My school has been practicing for this for ages. I'm worried if anyone goes past me it will be so embarrassing. As we race around Miss Milburn and head down the hill. I look back and see there their little legs racing . I hope they don't fall down the hill that would mean I'd have to deal with a crying 8 year old. You may be wondering why my competition was a little young that's because I was their guide. As I pulled into the finish line I watched all the kids sprint past. Then one kid sprints his heart out then trips and falls. Only one casualty so far.

I walk back to my bag have some food then we have to line up. I start to get nervous but it goes away because we had to what in line FOREVER! When we finally lined up at the start line. I was feeling tired but woke myself up by doing some stretches.( I was so happy I stretched I'm feeling no pain!) I had serious butterflies at this point. We had to wait at the start line for around 10 mins.

I kept my eyes on Miss Alloway who was holding the clapper. Then Miss Alloway suddenly said “ Are you ready? On your marks, get set ,CLAP! I ran into lead and around the cone that was the first of many corners. When I got into the forest that's when the stitch seriously kicked in. I felt like I was being stabbed. But I powered on knowing I was past halfway. When I got out of the forest I saw Marcus and Samuel entering. When I was on my last lap I looked back and saw Eb coming but I had the finish line in site.I sprinted to the finish knowing that I would get a rest. I went and saw my parents. I chatted to James. Then I had to go. When I headed home I was happy with my performance and excited because that was my last school cross country.

Reading review

My predictions for The short and incredibly happy life of Riley. On the front cover it shows a happy mouse hugging a small sad man. My thoughts were that the small man was Riley and he started off sad but he finds something he likes and becomes happy and has an incredibly happy and short life. But when you turn the first page it shows the same happy mouse sleeping hugging the same small sad man. Then I started thinking the mouse was Riley. Reading the book it showed the mouse Riley being happy with the small things in life where humans are never happy and always need the next best thing. When you finish it ends with Riley dying happily and the author suggesting to be content with the small things in life. For me this book is so true with it saying stuff like humans want to be taller-shorter-thinner-here-but-much-bigger-there-curly-straight-younger-older-less-spotty-moustache-smooth-skin-golden-tan-gorgeous-irresistible-not-bald-and-famous-in-a-painting.( that took very long to type by the way) This is a very good book if you're looking for a laugh.

Mt Richardson

Water, food, jacket and jersey. The list kept going on in my mind over and over again. As a collected everything I realised something was missing my William Pike shirt! It was a Friday morning on the 13 March. My School was climbing Mt Richardson. It was also a William Pike challenge so I needed my shirt! I looked everywhere even in my sister's room but time was against me. So I had to go without my shirt. As I jumped in the car I thought about the journey ahead. When I got there I head straight to the Mt Thomas room. Then we headed to the bus. I sat next to Harry and we were off.

When we got there everyone was excited. We got in a line and started. Jack,Eb,Hugh and I got to the front pretty quickly. After the first hour I started getting sore but luckily we had a break. When we set off I was fuelled and ready to go . When we left I was sore again after half an hour of walking. Then I started recognising parts of the track which was even worse because I would run to the place I recognised hoping to see the top. But filled with despair when I saw more track. In the next hour not much happened until I saw the rockslide part of the track I remembered that it was near the end. After that I just ran till I got up the top. I was first there quickly followed by Holly. The next 30 minutes we had our lunch, looked for snow berries( without much luck) and sat down and talked.

When it was time to start are decent we weren't too sad. Going down was so fun. Me, Jack,Eb,Hugh,Kate and Josh( former loburn student helping out) would sprint then wait then sprint and so on. It was great Eb jumped of a big ledge and fell into a big mud puddle. It felt much quicker on the way down and as soon as I knew we were near I sprinted and just fell on the grass. I was the first down. When we got on the bus we were chatting away all the way back. It was so fun. Hopefully we do this at High School.

Reading review

I enjoyed the book and it is cleverly illustrated. The storyline is that there are two people Norman and Brenda always feel like they were missing out at life and they wanted to fall in love. They never really felt emotions and they were shy and not social. They tried to find love and even wet on a blind date but it never worked. Until Brenda wondered if the world looked better up high so she climbed a ladder and fell on top of Norman. Then they got married lived happily ever after. This book is reflects that you should never give up. The sentences are very well worded and illustrated. I recommend this book if you're looking for a puzzle.

Rakahuri Rage
On Sunday 20th of March I was eating muesli and watching batman when I heard knocking on the door. I look out the window to see Jack looking anxious and excited. I rush round the house looking for things like helmet, water and bike those three things racing around my head I said goodbye to Dad and got in the car.Jack and I discussed our thoughts on what we thought the day would be like. We picked up EB and team rednecks was off.( not my choice of name) When we got to the race course we were all a mixture of excitement and anxiety as we found the loburn  school marque. We set up then headed to the BNZ tent for a briefing. I was blinded from the Sun's Rays and knew It would be a hot day. I listened to the briefing and Marcus,Anna and Brooklyn's speech about main power swimming. We headed over to the start line everyone was pushing and shoving. Jack was going first then me then EB. The countdown started then they were off. I waited around for a while anxious then Holly came back which meant team Umizoomi was in front .I had to catch up to piper to get into the lead. I waited by my bike with EB giving advice then I heard someone shout “ Jacks coming!” A rush of adrenaline came when he tagged me and off I went. I was on a high gear(opps) so it was a slow start but once I got going it was good I passed lots of people ( Including piper ) and made up all the hills. Fear would pass through me as I skimmed past the trees. I finished my lap and tagged EB. I crashed on the bean bag and drank lots of water and felt a sense of achievement as my lap time was 23 mins. On the second lap I started changing my gears and was racing through. Then disaster struck I changed too many gears at once and my chain fell off! I was stuck on the side of track for a minute trying to fix it but I'm useless with bikes. When miss Kennedy came through and fixed it really quickly and soon I was off. When I came back I expected a really bad time but I got 23 mins again. That made me annoyed and relieved. Relieved because it wasn't bad but annoyed because what I what of gotten. When I was having my break I asked Pip how long we had to go we had 4 hours! I realised that I had lot more laps to go. On my 3rd lap I started feeling it really sore in my legs and I was losing speed when I finished I only got 25 mins I was frustrated. I rested and set myself a Goal  to bet 25 mins. It was just when I was thinking about my goal when my dad arrived he brought food and positive reinforcement. When I set off for my 4th lap I focused on my goal. When I got the familiar aching in my legs I powered through and got a lap time of 24 mins. On my 5th and final lap I got through and got 24 mins again. Everyone got photos and we packed up. We got a free burger from Heller's and went to prizegiving. I saw a lot of proud faces( and the dude from Heller's adds was there) as people went up to the podium. Then it was the primary school grade. Fast and furious 3 came first and my team came second. We won a twenty dollar voucher to bike barn and socks. The socks were really comfortable. This was my rakahuri rage story.
